Flowers in Haines

Dandelions are the most common flower here. And with 17 hours of sunlight, they sure are BIG

Volunteer Fire Department

The tower, located in the Ft. Seward complex, at the back of this structure was used to hang the hoses to dry.

Ft. Seward

Ft. Seward, the first permanent army post in Alaska, opened in 1902 and shut down in 1947. It was bought by a group of war veterans and they turned their dream into reality by creating an arts and commerce community. Hotels, restaurants, art galleries, and recreation sites are in this complex today.

Lori and Michael

Lori and Michael are working in Haines for 6 months at Chilkat Guides, where Michael is a guide for the raft company on the river, and Lori is busy in the office scheduling tours with the cruise ships that come into Haines and Skagway. They joined us for dinner and took us on a tour of the area. Thank you, Lori and Michael.

Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve

Created in 1982 this protects 48,000 acres of land along the Chilkat, Klehini and Tsirku Rivers. This is a fall and winter gathering place for over 3,500 bald eagles, the largest in the world. We have seen several eagles soaring high about the RV Park where we are camped.

Hammers

The Hammer Museum consists of over 1,500 hammers. The beautiful tulips are in front of this museum. We chose to spend our time enjoying the mountains instead of looking at hammers.

WELCOME

This sign greeted us as we drove into the small fishing village.

Haines, Alaska

Haines, Alaska is on the shores of America’s longest fjord. It is located 80 miles north of Juneau at the upper end of the Inside Passage. The snowcapped mountains that surround it are truly BEAUTIFUL!

Bike Ride

Our bike ride around Wye Lake in Watson Lake was a bit wet due to water on the trail. In fact we weren’t able to get back to the starting point because of all of the water.

Sign Forest

The World Famous Sign Post Forest is in Watson Lake. It was started in 1942 by a homesick U.S. Army G.I. who was working on the Alaska Highway. He erected a sign pointing the way and stating the mileage to his hometown. This lead to others doing the same and now there are over 60,000

Wind Gauge

An artist's tongue-in-cheek sculpture of a wind gauge found in Lethbridge, Alberta.

NORTH TO ALASKA

We’ve had a dream to see Alaska and decided that this was the year to do it. We left Billings and headed north on May 19th. We saw acres and acres of strip farming in Alberta, Canada.

Ft. Benton, Montana

Ft. Benton is known as the Birthplace of Montana. In the 1800’s steamboats brought goods on the Missouri River to this area. Shep is one of the statues in the park in Ft. Benton. What a faithful dog!

Billings

After driving by the property Dan’s sister, Mary, and her husband have purchased, we stopped at Prairie Winds Restaurant in Molt, Montana, located west of Billings. Lunch was delicious. Thanks, Wally and Mary.

Beautiful flowers, Mary.

Happy Birthday, Jennie

April 26th was a special day for a special "daughter". Happy 30th, Jennie.
