Surf Lessons

Surfing was a fun adventure for Zac and Jen. Before going into the water, they had to practice the moves on land.

After checking in at 6:15 a.m., we boarded the 55’ Catamaran for a sail along the Na Pali Coast, which can only be seen by helicopter or boat. Seeing the Spinner dolphins up close was a special treat.

Jeremy and Stephanie enjoyed this activity. It was like flying through the trees.

Kaua'i Hawaii

The best part of being in Hawaii for two weeks was spending time with family. Zac and Jennie and Jeremy and Stephanie joined us on the island of Kaua'i at Pono Kai resort, which is in Kapa'a.

Kayak trip

Jeremy, Stephanie, Dan, and Karen spent a fun day on the Wailua River kayaking to the "secret falls".

Engaged

Jeremy proposed to Stephanie on May 15th on the beach in Hawaii.

Work Yard







I spent about a week in the work yard doing various minor maintenance projects on the boat.  I had the yard personnel do some work on the rudder.  I was able to stay in the boat each night while there.  It was better than sleeping in the back of the truck out behind the dune on the beach.









The boat is finally in a slip at Marina San Carlos.  Believe it or not, I didn’t hit anything on the way in.










Aren’t I beautiful?  This is on one of my first sails in the boat.  We are just outside the entrance to Bahia San Carlos.















Who is steering?  It is the Raymarine Autohelm 3000, of course!  The blue line on the deck of the cockpit is attached to ME!  I wear an inflatable life vest with a built-in harness that I attach to the blue tether to keep me on board while sailing single handed.









Single handing just outside of Bahia San Carlos.  The peak in the distance is Tetras de Cabras (goats teets).  I have a single reef in the mainsail.  The orange line on the left is one of the jacklines that I install while single handing.  When I have to go out on deck, I unclip the tether from the eye in the cockpit and attach it to the windward jackline.  Should I trip or slip this should keep me on board.

Family

There is nothing more important than family. We are lucky enough to have our sons and their beautiful ladies living close to us. We had a great lasagna and salad dinner this night with chocolate chip cookies and brownies with nuts and caramel for desert.

Topper & Stuff

For years I have been kind of looking for a topper for my pickup truck. I finally came up with a rational justification as to really needing one - the new sailboat. In order to cart all the stuff back and forth I need to protect the cargo from the weather and sticky fingers. I did find a nice used one, though. Take a look.


Here is a picture of much of the stuff I will be carting down in the next week. I am still waiting for a big order from West Marine to arrive and have a little more shopping to do.

Here are some more pictures of my new "hole in the water." I have decided to call the boat ÖBO, which is Swedish for Islander. The first O has those two little dots over it (umlaut). Anyone know the correct pronunciation?

Islander 32

This is a picture of the Islander 32 sailboat that I just purchased in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. This is a long-held dream of mine that has finally come true. I am in the process of trying to decide on a new name for the boat. Anyone out there got any ideas? Any sailors out there?

Stargazing

Our friends, Steve and Veronica, have a high powered telescope. We spent several hours looking at the stars here in San Carlos. Saturn was the most awe-inspiring that we saw. Here is a picture of Saturn.

Whale Watching

The H and M Landing Whale Watching cruise took us out into the ocean about 9 miles. We saw several gray whales blowing and surfacing in the distance.

We had a wonderful “catching-up” time with Bob and Belinda Biron, friends who used to live in Lakewood and now live in San Diego.

Hotel Del Coronado

All of the U.S. Presidents have stayed at this famous San Diego landmark. It was built in 1888. The mushroom shape tree in the center of the picture is a Dragon Tree, native to the Canary Islands. This view is of the front entrance to the hotel.
