Stargazing

Our friends, Steve and Veronica, have a high powered telescope. We spent several hours looking at the stars here in San Carlos. Saturn was the most awe-inspiring that we saw. Here is a picture of Saturn.

Whale Watching

The H and M Landing Whale Watching cruise took us out into the ocean about 9 miles. We saw several gray whales blowing and surfacing in the distance.

Birons

We had a wonderful “catching-up” time with Bob and Belinda Biron, friends who used to live in Lakewood and now live in San Diego.

Hotel Del Coronado

All of the U.S. Presidents have stayed at this famous San Diego landmark. It was built in 1888. The mushroom shape tree in the center of the picture is a Dragon Tree, native to the Canary Islands. This view is of the front entrance to the hotel.

“ejection seat”
How about a nap? This is a typical bunk for a Jr. Officer.

USS Midway

This WWII Air Carrier, USS Midway, is 1001 feet long. The flight deck is 4.02 acres and the overall height of the boat is about 20 stories tall. It can hold 80 aircraft, according to the docent. The wings that fold up allow more planes to be carried on this ship.

Ralphs

Hey, Ralph, we found this in downtown San Diego.

Windmills

A welcome wave from the California Windmills.

Trees

After shopping, eating lunch, and listening to some jazz in Seaport Village, we took a bike ride north along the waterfront. This interesting “tree” is named “Tree of Delight.” The one that Dan is standing by is named “Cnidarian Elements.” You can find out more about this art project by going to http://portofsandiego.org/sandiego_publicart/urbantrees/one/trees/index.asp

Hats

One of the shops in Seaport Village is the Village Hat Shop. What fun!

Seaport Village

We spent the day in Seaport Village, which is right by downtown San Diego.

Cancer Survior Park

This park is located on Harbor Drive close to the airport. We rode by it on our 10 mile bike ride.

Clunk

While we were sitting in the truck, which was parked under a palm tree, we heard a big CLUNK. We did jump!

Sand Storm

While I attended the Elderhostel, Dan camped at Lake Pleasant, which is located northwest of Phoenix. We ended up spending an extra day there due to the strong winds. Check out the sand dunes in the back of the pickup!

Surprise

My friend Doris lives with her husband, Jim, in Sun Village, in Surprise, AZ. While Jim drove us around their community, I took pictures of the many different kinds of cactus plants and the complex where the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers practice in the spring.

Elderhostel

The Elderhostel that I attended with Mary and Mom Heismann, took place in Phoenix. We learned how musicals come to life and enjoyed a dinner theatre performance of Man Of La Mancha: heard the Phoenix Symphony present the Joys of Music: Pops or Classic; sampled cultural cuisines of Arizona, visited a culinary school; and toured the Pueblo Grande Museum and the capitol. Dan was able to join us at the dinner theatre. During our free time we went to the Phoenix Art Museum and the Heard Museum, which contains Native American Art. The excellent instructors made learning an exciting experience.

Reunion

What fun it was to see Gus and Nancy in Phoenix. This picture was taken the day before the Elderhostel began.

Border

We had to wait in line for only 45 min before crossing the border. The 2 border patrol men came into our motor home and took our frozen chicken, eggs, bacon, oranges, and grapefruit. They grind up all the fruit that comes into the US and give the other food items to a local orphanage in Nogales, AZ.

La Manga

La Manga is a small fishing village north of San Carlos, Mexico. This is a picture of an elementary teacher and some of her students. The bags in the “maestro’s” hands contain items that we donated to the school. While I took a peek at their one room classroom, the students were having fun outside at recess.

The second picture shows what their living conditions are like in this village.

Slug-a-Bug

Through out this trip we have been watching for Volkswagen beetle/bugs. When one of us spots one we say, “Slug-a-bug” and indicate the color and point to it. It is a race to see who sees the most. This is a picture of a unique one that we found in Mexico. We learned this “game” from Uncle Gus and Aunt Nancy.

Bike Ride

An ice cream cone from Thrifty Ice Cream Store was very satisfying at the beginning of our bike ride and a Corona from Froggy's ended our ride on a cool and refreshing note.

Cactus Forest

This cactus forest is north of San Carlos.

Popeye's

Popeye’s is a roadside stand in San Carlos that serves the best hamburgers. Yum

Tony's

When buying fresh produce in San Carlos, Tony’s is the place to go. His yellow truck holds such items as bananas, pineapples, eggs, lettuce, broccoli, peppers, apples, oranges, tomatoes, and the white coolers on the tables contain fish. We especially enjoyed the fresh salsa that we bought there. Tony is taking Dan’s pesos.
